The ghost pepper is one of the hottest peppers in the world. It is a hybrid pepper, grown in the northeastern states of India. The name is a literal translation of her name in Hindi: Bhut Jolokia. Bhut in Hindi means "ghost", while Jolokia translates as pepper or chilli. However, as North East India is a very linguistically diverse part of the world, the gros pepper goes by many different names including: Ghost Chili, Red Naga Chili, Naga Bhut Jolokia, Bhoot Jolokia and more.
