In English
Yautía lila (purple yautía) is a tannia, classified by the University of Puerto Rico as Xanthosoma violaceum, a starchy root grown in Puerto Rico since pre-Columbian times. Outside Puerto Rico yautía is often sold as malanga.
Cooked, it is creamy and smooth with a mild, earthy flavor.
Always cook it well. Peel, cube and boil in salted water for 25 to 30 minutes, then mash it or add it to soups, stews and beans; grated, it is the base of alcapurrias and pasteles.
